Charging At Home

A Full Battery Every Morning

Charging at home is the cheapest and easiest way to run an electric car. You plug in when you get home and the battery is full by the morning, with no detour to a public charger and no waiting around while it fills.

A dedicated charging circuit is what makes that dependable. It charges considerably faster than a standard powerpoint, so even a long day of driving is recovered comfortably overnight, and it runs on its own circuit instead of sharing with everything else in the house.

How straightforward the install is comes down to your switchboard. A modern board with spare capacity usually has room for the circuit. An older board that is already full generally needs upgrading first, which is worth knowing before you order a charger.

  • A full battery each morning without planning your day around charging
  • Considerably faster charging than a standard powerpoint
  • Its own circuit, so it is not sharing with the rest of the house
  • The charger mounted where the cable reaches the car comfortably
  • Switchboard capacity confirmed before you order anything

The Solution

Charge Overnight on a Circuit Built for It

A dedicated charger on its own circuit fills the battery while you sleep and takes the load off everything else in the house. No lead across the path, no wondering whether it will be ready in the morning.

The job starts at the switchboard, not the wall. We check the capacity, confirm there is a position for the circuit and look at the run from the board to wherever the car parks. That tells us what the install genuinely involves, so the quote reflects the actual job.

From there it is the circuit, the protection it needs, and mounting the charger somewhere the cable reaches comfortably without being stretched or trodden on. If the board needs work first, that is quoted with the rest.

Tell us what car you have, what charger you are considering and roughly where it parks. That is usually enough to get started.

  • Aaron L Customer

We were so lucky that some friends recommended Liam. He's friendly, thoughtful, interested in solving problems, in a way that makes him a delight to deal with. We couldn't be happier with the results of his work and unlike other sparkies we've worked with, he turns up on time and even came back on his day off to make sure everything was working as it should. His prices are fair, and his work is of a very high standard. Couldn't be happier. We will definitely be hiring Liam for all future work in our house.

Asked Questions

EV Charger Questions

  • Yes. A charger draws a steady load for hours, which is exactly what a shared circuit is not designed for. A dedicated circuit sized and protected for the charger is the standard way it is done, and it is what keeps the rest of the house unaffected.

  • That is the first thing we check. A modern board with safety switches and a spare position usually will. An older board that is full, or that still has fuses rather than breakers, generally needs upgrading first. Either way you find out before committing to a charger.

  • Either works. If you have already chosen a unit, tell us which one and we will confirm what it requires. If you have not, tell us your car and how you use it and we can talk through what the install would look like for different options.

  • Further than most people assume, but distance affects cable size and therefore cost. A garage close to the board is straightforward. A carport at the other end of the property means a longer run, which we measure and include in the quote instead of estimating.

  • A straightforward install where the board has capacity is usually done in a day. Where a switchboard upgrade is needed first, that is a separate piece of work and we schedule the two together so the charger goes in once the board is ready.

  • It depends on the charger, the distance from the switchboard and whether the board needs work first. We look at all three and give you a clear quote. Quotes are free, and if the answer is that your board needs upgrading, we will tell you that instead of working around it.
