Asked Questions

Home Electrical Questions

  • The everyday electrical work a house needs. Adding and replacing powerpoints, switchboard upgrades and safety switches, smoke alarm replacement, tracing and repairing faults, general repairs and maintenance, and connecting appliances that need hardwiring rather than a plug.

  • It is worth looking at if the board still has ceramic fuses, has no safety switches, or has no spare positions left to add a circuit. If it already has circuit breakers, safety switches and room to grow, we will tell you it is fine, not sell you a new one.

  • Leave that circuit off instead of resetting it repeatedly, because the switch is telling you current is leaking somewhere it should not. If it stays on once you unplug a particular appliance, that appliance is the likely cause. If it trips again straight away with nothing plugged in, it needs testing.

  • In most cases yes. Where there is accessible roof or subfloor space, new cable can usually be run without cutting into wall linings. Some positions do need patching, and if that applies we tell you before the work starts rather than after.

  • It depends on the job and on how the existing wiring has been run, which is why we look before quoting instead of guessing over the phone. Adding an outlet on an accessible wall is straightforward. A switchboard upgrade or a fault buried in a wall takes longer. Quotes are free.

  • We are based in Berwick and cover the City of Casey, Cardinia Shire and the Baw Baw Shire towns of Drouin and Warragul. That includes Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Clyde, Endeavour Hills, Hampton Park, Hallam, Officer, Pakenham, Beaconsfield, Emerald, Gembrook and Bunyip.

Home Electrical Work Explained

Powerpoints That Have Failed or Run Out

Outlets wear out. The internal contacts loosen after years of plugs going in and out, which shows up as a plug that falls out under its own weight, warmth around the faceplate or discolouration on the plastic. Any of those is worth replacing instead of living with.

Another common request is simply not having enough. Homes built before everyone had a home office, several devices charging and appliances in every corner run short, and the gap gets filled with double adaptors and leads across the floor. Adding outlets where you actually use them removes all of that.

Switchboards, Safety Switches and Capacity

A switchboard has two jobs: protect the circuits, and give you somewhere to add more. Older boards with ceramic fuses do neither well. They offer no residual current protection, and they are usually full, so there is no position left for air conditioning, an EV charger or a shed supply.

An upgrade replaces that with circuit breakers and safety switches across every circuit, spare capacity for what comes next, and labelling that makes sense. It is also the point at which years of accumulated wiring gets tidied up and identified.

Smoke Alarms and What Actually Fails

Smoke alarms have a service life and stop being reliable well before they stop making noise. The chirping most people put up with is usually the alarm telling you it has reached the end of it, not that it wants another battery.

Replacing them is quick work, and it is worth doing across the whole house at once so they are all on the same replacement cycle instead of failing one at a time over several years.

Finding Faults and Making Repairs

An electrical fault rarely announces itself where the damage is. A tripping safety switch tells you a circuit is leaking current, but the leak could be a cracked outdoor powerpoint, a failing hot water element, a nail through a cable, or a light fitting that has taken in water from the roof.

Fault finding narrows that down. We isolate each circuit at the switchboard, test them one at a time and reconnect appliances progressively until the fault reappears. From there the repair is a known quantity, priced before it happens, not after.

Connecting Appliances Properly

Ovens, cooktops, rangehoods and some laundry appliances are hardwired rather than plugged in, and several of them draw enough current to need a circuit of their own. Running a new appliance off whatever outlet happens to be nearby is how circuits end up overloaded.

We check what the appliance requires, confirm the switchboard can carry it, and connect it on a suitable circuit. If a new circuit is needed, that is quoted up front as part of the job.
