Is Your Switchboard Holding the House Back?
Most switchboards in older homes were sized for a household that ran a fraction of what yours does now. One television, no air conditioning, no induction cooktop, no home office and certainly no car plugged in overnight.
The signs are easy to recognise once you know them. Ceramic fuses with fuse wire instead of switches. No safety switches at all, or one covering a single circuit. A board so full there is nowhere to add anything. Breakers that trip more often than they used to.
The practical problem is that it blocks everything else. Wanting air conditioning, an EV charger or power to a shed turns into a conversation about the board first. The safety side matters just as much: without residual current protection, a fault has nothing between it and whoever is touching the appliance.
- Ceramic fuses or rewireable fuse wire instead of circuit breakers
- No safety switches, or only one covering part of the house
- A full board with no spare position to add a circuit
- Scorch marks, heat discolouration or a burning smell at the board
- Unlabelled circuits, so isolating one area means turning off the house

A Switchboard That Protects the House and Has Room to Grow
An upgrade gives you a board with residual current protection across every circuit, breakers sized for the wiring behind them, and spare positions ready for whatever gets added next.
The everyday difference is smaller than you would expect and more useful than it sounds. Circuits are labelled, so isolating the kitchen no longer means turning off the whole house. A fault trips one circuit instead of everything. And when you decide on air conditioning or a car charger, the answer is a straightforward quote rather than a board replacement first.
We look at the existing board, count the circuits, check the condition of the enclosure and the incoming supply, and give you a clear quote. If we find wiring that needs attention once the board is open, you hear about it and decide before anything else happens.
If you already know an EV charger, air conditioning or a shed supply is coming, say so when we quote. Sizing the board for it now costs far less than adding capacity later.

We were so lucky that some friends recommended Liam. He's friendly, thoughtful, interested in solving problems, in a way that makes him a delight to deal with. We couldn't be happier with the results of his work and unlike other sparkies we've worked with, he turns up on time and even came back on his day off to make sure everything was working as it should. His prices are fair, and his work is of a very high standard. Couldn't be happier. We will definitely be hiring Liam for all future work in our house.

Switchboard Upgrade Questions
Look for ceramic fuses with fuse wire instead of switches, an absence of safety switches, a board that is completely full with no spare positions, scorching or heat marks, or breakers that trip more often than they used to. Any of those is a reason to have it looked at. If the board is already modern and has capacity, we will say so.
A circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload, so it stops cables overheating. A safety switch, or RCD, protects people by cutting power within milliseconds when it detects current leaking to earth, such as through someone touching a live part. They do different jobs, which is why a modern board has both.
Most upgrades are a single day on site, though it depends on the size of the board, the number of circuits and the condition of the existing wiring. We give you a realistic idea when we quote, after looking at the board, not before.
Yes, the supply has to be off for the parts of the job that involve the main connections. We let you know beforehand so you can plan around it, and we work to keep the outage to the part of the day it is genuinely needed.
It depends on the number of circuits, the size and condition of the existing board and enclosure, and whether any of the existing wiring needs attention once the board is opened up. We look at it and give you a clear quote. Quotes are free.
Yes, and it is the sensible time to do it. If you know an EV charger, air conditioning or a shed supply is coming, tell us at the quote stage and we will size the board with the spare positions to suit rather than you paying for a second visit later.
