The Problem

New Appliance, Old Wiring

The appliance arrives, the kitchen is finished, and then it turns out the electrical side was never really thought about. It happens on a lot of renovations because the appliance is chosen long after the wiring was done.

The catch is that ovens, cooktops and some laundry appliances are hardwired, not plugged in, and several of them draw enough current to need a circuit of their own. Connecting one to whatever outlet happens to be nearby is how circuits end up overloaded.

Induction cooktops are the common surprise. They draw considerably more than the gas cooktop or older electric unit they replaced, and the existing circuit frequently is not sized for them.

  • A hardwired appliance with no suitable connection point nearby
  • An induction cooktop replacing gas or an older electric unit
  • A circuit that trips when the oven and cooktop run together
  • A switchboard with no spare position for a new appliance circuit
  • An appliance connected to an outlet that was never intended for it

The Solution

Connected on a Circuit That Can Carry It

The right order is to check the electrical side before the appliance is delivered, not after. We look at what the unit requires, confirm the switchboard can carry it and check what the existing circuit was sized for.

From there the job is either a straightforward connection, or a new dedicated circuit run from the board. Which one applies is known before the day rather than discovered during it, so nothing stalls with a kitchen half finished.

Where several appliances are going in as part of a renovation, doing them together is far more efficient. One visit, one look at the board, and the circuits planned around what the finished kitchen will actually draw.

Tell us which appliances you have chosen and we will tell you what the electrical side involves.

Asked Questions

Appliance Installation Questions

  • Anything hardwired, not plugged in. Ovens, most cooktops, rangehoods in some installations, and certain laundry appliances. If it does not come with a plug on the end, it needs connecting by an electrician.

  • Very often, yes. Induction draws considerably more than gas or an older electric cooktop, and the existing circuit is frequently not sized for it. That gets checked before the appliance is installed rather than after it trips the first time you use it.

  • Yes. Tell us the make and model, or send a photo of the specification plate, and we will confirm what it requires and whether the existing supply suits it.

  • Yes, and that is the sensible time. Doing the circuits before the cabinetry goes in is far easier than working around a finished kitchen. Tell us the appliance list early and we will work in with the builder or cabinetmaker.

  • No, we handle the electrical connection. You choose and supply the appliance, and we make sure the circuit behind it is right for what you have chosen.

  • A straightforward connection where a suitable circuit already exists is quick. Running a new dedicated circuit from the switchboard costs more and depends on the distance and the board's capacity. We confirm which applies before quoting, and the quote is free.
