Is That Chirping Alarm Telling You Something?
Nearly everyone has done the same thing. An alarm starts chirping at two in the morning, a fresh battery goes in, and a few weeks later it starts again. At some point it gets taken off the ceiling and put in a drawer.
The chirp is often not about the battery. Smoke alarms have a service life, and past it the sensor becomes unreliable well before the unit stops making noise. An alarm that looks fine on the ceiling can be years past the point where it can be trusted.
Another common problem is coverage. Alarms installed years ago were often fitted to the minimum of the day, which can leave a bedroom hallway or a second storey without anything useful.
- An alarm that keeps chirping no matter how many batteries go in
- Units with no date on them, or a date more than a decade old
- An alarm that has been taken down and not replaced
- Discoloured or yellowed casings
- No alarm at all in part of the house

Alarms You Do Not Have to Think About
Replacing smoke alarms is quick work with a disproportionate payoff. New units, correctly positioned, that do what they are supposed to do without waking the house for no reason.
Doing the whole house at once is the sensible approach. It puts every alarm on the same replacement cycle instead of having them fail one at a time over several years, and it means the coverage gets looked at properly rather than unit by unit.
We check where the existing alarms are, whether that covers the sleeping areas and circulation spaces sensibly, and whether the units are hardwired or battery. From there you get a price for the lot.
It is worth doing at the same time as any other work around the house, since it adds very little to a visit that is already happening.

Smoke Alarm Questions
Alarms have a manufacturer's expiry, usually printed on the unit itself, and the sensor becomes unreliable as it approaches that date. If you cannot find a date on yours, that in itself suggests they are old enough to be worth replacing.
The most common reason is that the unit has reached the end of its service life and is signalling that, not a flat battery. Dust in the sensor and a loose battery contact are the other two. If a new battery does not stop it, the alarm needs replacing.
It depends on the layout, the number of storeys and where the bedrooms sit. Rather than quoting a number blind, we look at the house and tell you what sensible coverage looks like for it, including anywhere that currently has nothing.
Where there is access to run cable to the alarm positions, yes. Hardwired alarms take their power from the house and are the more reliable arrangement. We check the access at the quote and tell you which positions are practical.
Yes, and it is the cheapest way to do it. If we are already at the property for a switchboard upgrade, lighting or repairs, adding smoke alarms to the same visit costs far less than a separate trip.
