Planning the Fitout

What the Electrical Side Needs to Cover

Fitting out a new premises is one of the few times you get to decide where everything goes, and the electrical work is what makes those decisions stick. Most of it is set at rough-in, before the linings go up and long before anything is plugged in.

The equipment schedule is where it starts. Each appliance has a load and a pattern of use, and once those are on paper it becomes clear which items want a circuit of their own, which can share, and what the board needs to carry when the place is busy.

Position matters just as much. Where the till sits, which side staff approach the machine from, what needs switching off at the end of a shift. Those are quick decisions to make on a plan and expensive ones to change once the joinery is in.

  • Circuits worked out from your equipment schedule
  • Dedicated circuits where the load calls for one
  • Outlet positions planned around how staff use the space
  • Power for point of sale, data and display lighting
  • Rough-in sequenced with your shopfitter or builder

How We Work

From Equipment List to Final Fit-Off

We start with your equipment schedule and floor plan. That tells us the circuits, the protection and the board capacity, and it means the rough-in is done once with the finished space in mind.

Then we go through positions with whoever will actually be working in the room. It's a short conversation at the planning stage that you notice every day afterwards.

We can take the fitout from rough-in through to final fit-off and testing, or handle a defined part of it if you already have trades engaged. Where there's a shopfitter, builder or project manager involved, we coordinate with them directly so the electrical work lands in the right order.

You'll get a clear quote and a realistic timeline, including anything that depends on a supply authority or an inspection. If your opening date is tight, we'll be straight with you about it.

Asked Questions

Fitout Questions

  • As soon as you have a floor plan and a rough equipment list. Most of the decisions that are expensive to change later are made at rough-in, which happens well before anyone thinks about the electrician. Getting the circuits and positions right at that point costs nothing extra.

  • Yes, and it makes the job go far better. We coordinate on sequencing so the rough-in happens before linings go up and the fit-off happens once the joinery is in. If there's a project manager we'll deal with them directly.

  • Sometimes, depending on what's being changed. Work that means isolating the bench or the kitchen will need those areas out of use for a period. We'll go through what's possible at the quote so the schedule is agreed rather than worked out on the day.

  • Usually. Commercial machines draw heavily and run for most of the day, and sharing a circuit with grinders and a glass washer can leave you tripping mid-service. Larger machines may also need three phase, which is worth confirming before you order.

  • We run the power for it and can coordinate the data side so the cabling is in before the linings close up. Tell us where the tills, printers and screens are going at the planning stage and it gets built into the rough-in.

  • It comes down to the equipment schedule, the state of the existing switchboard and how much of the space is changing. A refit of an existing cafe is a different job to a bare shell. We'll look at it and provide a clear quote, and the quote itself is free.
