The Problem

Is the Room Lit in the Wrong Places?

A room can be perfectly well lit on paper and still be irritating to use. The classic version is a single fitting in the middle of the ceiling that leaves the corners dim and puts your own shadow on whatever you are doing at the bench.

Another common complaint is switching. Everything on one switch means the room is either fully lit or dark, with nothing in between. That is fine in a hallway and wrong in a living room where you want something softer in the evening.

And then there are the fittings themselves. Yellowed plastic, a fitting that has never been replaced since the house was built, or one that flickers because the transformer behind it is on the way out.

  • One central fitting leaving the edges of the room dim
  • Your own shadow falling on the bench or desk
  • Everything on a single switch, so it is bright or nothing
  • Fittings that have yellowed, flicker or buzz
  • A room that has been renovated but never had its lighting revisited

The Solution

Lighting Planned Around the Room

We start with what the room is for. Where you sit, where you work, what you want it to feel like at nine at night as opposed to nine in the morning. That decides the positions far more usefully than symmetry does.

From there it is fittings that suit the ceiling and the space, positioned to light the surfaces you use, not the middle of the floor, and grouped onto switches that make sense. A living area with two switched groups is a completely different room to one with a single circuit.

Where there is roof access the work is generally straightforward and nothing needs patching. Where a position is awkward, we tell you at the quote rather than partway through.

Send through the rooms you want to change and what bothers you about them now. That is usually enough to get started.

  • Aaron L Customer

We were so lucky that some friends recommended Liam. He's friendly, thoughtful, interested in solving problems, in a way that makes him a delight to deal with. We couldn't be happier with the results of his work and unlike other sparkies we've worked with, he turns up on time and even came back on his day off to make sure everything was working as it should. His prices are fair, and his work is of a very high standard. Couldn't be happier. We will definitely be hiring Liam for all future work in our house.

Asked Questions

Indoor Lighting Questions

  • Usually, provided there is access above the ceiling to run cable to the new position. The old position needs patching and painting, which is not something we do, so we tell you at the quote what will need making good.

  • It depends on the ceiling height, the room size and what happens in it, so a fixed number per square metre is not a useful answer. What matters more is where they sit relative to benches, seating and walls. We work that out with you instead of spacing them evenly and hoping.

  • In most cases yes, and it is one of the cheapest improvements you can make to a living area. Whether it is straightforward depends on how the existing circuit is run, which we check before quoting.

  • Yes. Heavier fittings need a mounting point rated to carry them, not a standard ceiling rose, so we check what is above the ceiling at that position. Tell us the fitting you have chosen and we will confirm what it needs.

  • We keep the work as clean as possible and remove old fittings properly, but plastering and painting are separate trades. Where a position will need making good, you hear that before the work starts so you can arrange it.

  • It depends on the number of fittings, whether positions already exist and how accessible the ceiling space is. Doing several rooms in one visit is much cheaper than returning. Quotes are free.
