Does the Garden Disappear at Night?
A garden that has had years of work put into it typically gets looked at in daylight on weekends, and is completely invisible for the hours most people are actually home.
The driveway is the same story. A long approach with established planting either side reads as a black strip after sunset, and the only light is whatever spills out of the house.
There is a practical side too. Unlit paths, steps and driveway edges are where people trip, and guests arriving at night have no idea where to walk.
- Established garden that is invisible after sunset
- A driveway with no lighting along its length
- Paths and steps that are dark and awkward at night
- Guests unsure where to walk when they arrive after dark
- Relying on a single flood light that lights everything harshly

A Property That Looks Right After Dark
Landscape lighting changes a property more than almost any other outdoor job, and it is the one people are most pleased with once it is finished. A driveway lined with in ground fittings, uplights into established trees, or low level lighting along a path completely changes how the place reads at night.
The approach that works is layered rather than bright. Low level light along the routes people walk, uplighting on the things worth looking at, and nothing pointed where it will glare at you as you come up the drive.
The practical side is planning the runs. Where the cable goes, what has to be trenched, and how the fittings are grouped onto switches so you are not lighting the entire property to walk to the bin.
It is easiest while landscaping is underway, but it can be retrofitted to an established garden with care about where the trenching goes.

We were so lucky that some friends recommended Liam. He's friendly, thoughtful, interested in solving problems, in a way that makes him a delight to deal with. We couldn't be happier with the results of his work and unlike other sparkies we've worked with, he turns up on time and even came back on his day off to make sure everything was working as it should. His prices are fair, and his work is of a very high standard. Couldn't be happier. We will definitely be hiring Liam for all future work in our house.

Garden Lighting Questions
Yes, with care about where the cable runs go. We plan the route to disturb as little as possible and tell you before starting what would need to be lifted or trenched, so there are no surprises in a garden you have spent years on.
For garden and driveway fittings, generally yes, in conduit at a suitable depth. That is what keeps it protected from garden work later. We set the route out with you before any digging happens.
Usually low level fittings along the edges, not tall lights, so the light defines the route without glaring at you as you drive in. Spacing depends on the length and the fittings, which we work out at the planning stage.
No. Modern LED landscape fittings draw very little, so the running cost is minor compared with the difference they make. The cost sits in the installation rather than the electricity.
Yes. Timers and light sensitive switching are both common on landscape lighting so it comes on at dusk without anyone thinking about it. Tell us how you want it controlled and we will set it up at installation.
It depends on the number of fittings, the length of the runs and how much trenching is involved. We plan the layout with you first so the quote reflects the actual job. Quotes are free.
