The Problem

Is the Shed Running Off an Extension Lead?

It is the most common backyard setup there is. A lead from the house to the shed, one work light hanging from a beam, and a power board on the bench that everything plugs into.

The limitation is not obvious until you hit it. A lead can only carry so much, so a decent saw or compressor either trips the circuit or runs poorly, and running a heater out there in winter is out of the question.

Lighting is the other half. One bulb in the middle of a shed leaves the bench and the back corner in shadow, which is exactly where you need to see what you are doing.

  • An extension lead permanently run from the house to the shed
  • Tools that trip the circuit or run poorly
  • A single light leaving the bench and corners in shadow
  • A power board doing permanent duty on the workbench
  • No way to use the space properly in winter

The Solution

A Shed You Can Actually Work In

A dedicated supply removes the ceiling on what the space can do. Run from the switchboard, either underground in conduit or overhead depending on the property, it gives the shed its own circuits instead of borrowing from the house.

From there it is lighting and outlets planned around how the space is used. Light over the bench, not the middle of the floor, outlets where the tools live, and enough of them that nothing needs a power board.

Shed lighting is where the difference is most obvious. LED battens or strip lighting positioned over the working areas turns a dim shed into somewhere you can see what you are doing at seven on a winter evening.

Tell us the distance from the house and what you plan to run out there, and we will size the supply for it rather than for what is plugged in today.

Where the workshop is heavier again, with a welder, compressor or machinery that needs three phase, that sits under our three phase power and machinery work.

  • Aaron L Customer

We were so lucky that some friends recommended Liam. He's friendly, thoughtful, interested in solving problems, in a way that makes him a delight to deal with. We couldn't be happier with the results of his work and unlike other sparkies we've worked with, he turns up on time and even came back on his day off to make sure everything was working as it should. His prices are fair, and his work is of a very high standard. Couldn't be happier. We will definitely be hiring Liam for all future work in our house.

Asked Questions

Shed and Garage Electrical Questions

  • With a dedicated circuit run from the switchboard, either underground in conduit or overhead depending on the property and the distance. We measure the run instead of estimating it, because distance affects the cable size and therefore the cost.

  • It is not a substitute, and it is the arrangement most likely to cause problems. A lead is not protected the way a fixed circuit is, it is a trip hazard across a yard, and it limits what you can run. A dedicated supply solves all three.

  • It depends on what goes in it. A shed used for storage and occasional jobs needs far less than a workshop running a compressor, welder or serious power tools. Tell us what you intend to use, not what is in there today and we will size it accordingly.

  • LED battens or strip lighting positioned over the working areas rather than a single fitting in the centre. Lighting the bench directly is what makes the difference. It is also worth having the lights on their own switch by the door.

  • Sometimes, particularly on a larger shed with several circuits or a long run from the house. A small sub board in the shed makes isolating circuits easier and is often the neater solution. We will tell you whether it is warranted.

  • Mostly it comes down to the distance and whether the cable goes underground. Trenching adds to it. We measure the run and quote the whole job. Quotes are free.
