The Problem

Why Outdoor Electrical Work Fails

Outdoor electrical fails in a small number of predictable ways, and almost none of them are bad luck. Water gets into an enclosure that was never rated for it. A seal perishes in the sun. Cable run without support eventually chafes through where it moves.

The underlying cause is usually the same: indoor fittings used outside because they were what was on the van. It looks identical on day one and completely different after two winters.

The symptom that brings people to it is nuisance tripping. A circuit that goes out after heavy rain and comes back once things dry out is almost always water somewhere it should not be.

  • A circuit that trips after rain and resets once it dries
  • Indoor rated fittings used in outdoor positions
  • Cracked, chalky or discoloured enclosures
  • Cable running unsupported or lying on the ground
  • Corrosion around outdoor fittings and fixings

The Solution

Specified for Where It Actually Lives

Doing outdoor electrical properly is not more complicated, it is just specific. Enclosures rated for permanent exposure, seals that suit the position, and mounting that lets water run off, not pool against the fitting.

Cable gets routed, supported and protected along its whole length, and anything below ground goes in conduit at a suitable depth so future garden work does not find it the hard way.

Where we are repairing instead of installing, the first job is working out what actually let the water in, because replacing a fitting without fixing the cause just resets the clock on the same failure.

It costs a little more on the day than using whatever is nearest, and considerably less over the ten years afterwards.

  • Aaron L Customer

We were so lucky that some friends recommended Liam. He's friendly, thoughtful, interested in solving problems, in a way that makes him a delight to deal with. We couldn't be happier with the results of his work and unlike other sparkies we've worked with, he turns up on time and even came back on his day off to make sure everything was working as it should. His prices are fair, and his work is of a very high standard. Couldn't be happier. We will definitely be hiring Liam for all future work in our house.

Asked Questions

Weatherproof Electrical Questions

  • Water reaching something it should not, almost every time. Common sources are an outdoor outlet in a fitting that was never rated for it, a light with a perished seal, or a junction that has taken in moisture. Isolating and testing the circuit finds it.

  • The enclosure rating, the seals and how it is mounted. A rated enclosure installed so water can pool against a gasket will still fail. The rating is the starting point rather than the whole answer.

  • Usually yes, and it is a common job. We assess what is there, identify what is not suitable for its position and quote the work to fix it. You get told what is urgent and what can wait.

  • Anything below ground does, at a suitable depth, which is what protects it from future garden and landscaping work. Above ground the requirement depends on the position and the exposure, and we specify accordingly.

  • Properly specified, many years without attention. Where outdoor work is failing after two or three years, the cause is nearly always fittings that were not rated for the position instead of anything unusual about the property.

  • It depends on how much is being replaced or installed and how accessible it is. We look at what is there, tell you what needs doing and quote it. Quotes are free.
