The Problem

Buying a Heater Before Checking the Supply

Pool heating is the thing that turns a three month pool into a six or eight month one, so it is an easy decision to make. The electrical side is the part that gets checked last.

A pool heat pump is typically the largest single load in the pool equipment area and one of the largest at the property. It runs for hours at a time, which makes an undersized or shared supply a problem quickly, not eventually.

The other issue is the switchboard. Adding a heater circuit assumes there is a position for it and capacity behind it, and on an older board neither is guaranteed.

  • A heater chosen without checking what supply it needs
  • An equipment circuit already at its limit with the pump and chlorinator
  • A switchboard with no spare position for another circuit
  • Nuisance tripping once the heater and pump run together
  • Cable to the equipment area that was sized years ago for far less load

The Solution

Supply Sized for the Heater You Have Chosen

The straightforward version of this job is checking three things before anything is ordered: what the unit actually requires, what the switchboard can carry, and what the existing run to the equipment area was sized for.

With those answers the rest is routine. A circuit sized for continuous operation, correctly protected, terminated at an isolator within reach of the unit, and run so the cable is supported and protected the whole way.

Where the existing equipment supply was sized before the heater was a consideration, upgrading it is usually the sensible move instead of adding to something already near its limit. We will tell you if that applies.

Send through the model you are considering and we will confirm what the electrical side involves before you commit to it.

We were so lucky that some friends recommended Liam. He's friendly, thoughtful, interested in solving problems, in a way that makes him a delight to deal with. We couldn't be happier with the results of his work and unlike other sparkies we've worked with, he turns up on time and even came back on his day off to make sure everything was working as it should. His prices are fair, and his work is of a very high standard. Couldn't be happier. We will definitely be hiring Liam for all future work in our house.

Asked Questions

Pool Heating Electrical Questions

  • Yes, and it is the single most useful thing you can do. Knowing what your switchboard can carry may influence which unit you choose, and it avoids discovering on installation day that the supply cannot handle it.

  • Generally no. Both draw steadily for long periods and the combined load is well beyond what a single equipment circuit is normally sized for. Sharing usually leads to tripping at exactly the time of year you want it running.

  • We handle the electrical supply, isolation and connection. Tell us who is supplying and fitting the unit and we will coordinate so the electrical work is complete before they arrive.

  • It might, particularly on an older board that is already full or that has no residual current protection. We check before quoting, and where an upgrade is needed we quote both pieces of work together so there are no surprises.

  • Distance is not usually the obstacle, but it does affect cable sizing and therefore cost. We measure the run instead of estimating it, so the quote reflects what the job actually needs.

  • It depends on the unit, the distance to the equipment area and whether the switchboard needs work first. We assess all three and give you a clear quote. Quotes are free.
