Does the Pool Area Go Dark at Sunset?
A pool gets used most on the evenings when it is still warm after dinner, which is exactly when a lot of pool areas become unusable because there is nothing lighting them.
The result is a space you paid a great deal for that you look at through a window for half the time you could be using it. Worse, an unlit pool surround is genuinely awkward to walk around at night.
Existing pool lights fail too. Water eventually finds its way into fittings and the light stops working, and because of where it sits nobody is keen to guess at the repair.
- A pool area that becomes unusable as soon as the sun goes down
- A pool light that has stopped working and been left
- Dark paving and steps around the pool at night
- Garden around the pool that disappears completely after dark
- Relying on a single flood light that lights everything harshly

A Pool Area That Works After Dark
Lighting around a pool does two things at once. It makes the space genuinely usable in the evening, and it makes the whole backyard look considered rather than switched off.
The mix that works is rarely one bright light. Low level lighting along the paving and steps, uplighting into the planting around the surround, and lighting on the equipment side so you can see what you are doing. Each on sensible switching so you are not lighting the whole yard to sit by the water.
Lighting within the pool itself depends entirely on how the pool was constructed and what conduit exists, so that gets assessed on site, not promised over the phone.
Everything outside is specified for a wet, exposed position, because that is where it lives permanently.

We were so lucky that some friends recommended Liam. He's friendly, thoughtful, interested in solving problems, in a way that makes him a delight to deal with. We couldn't be happier with the results of his work and unlike other sparkies we've worked with, he turns up on time and even came back on his day off to make sure everything was working as it should. His prices are fair, and his work is of a very high standard. Couldn't be happier. We will definitely be hiring Liam for all future work in our house.

Pool Lighting Questions
It depends on how the pool was built and whether there is conduit to the light position. That has to be looked at on site rather than answered in advance. Lighting around the pool is far more flexible and often does more for how the area feels at night.
Sometimes, and the first step is finding out why it failed. Water ingress into the fitting is the usual cause. We test the circuit and the fitting before recommending a repair or a replacement, instead of guessing.
Usually a combination, not one fitting. Low level lighting along the paving and steps for safety, uplighting into surrounding planting for the look, and something practical over the equipment area. Separate switching so you can use them independently.
It is, when the fittings, enclosures and protection are specified for the position. That is the whole reason electrical work near water has its own requirements, and it is why an outdoor fitting from a hardware store is not automatically suitable.
Often, depending on where the fittings need to go and what is already in the ground. We look at the route before quoting and tell you what would need lifting, if anything.
It depends on the number of fittings, the distance from the supply and what has to be trenched. We plan the layout with you, quote it, and only start once you have agreed. Quotes are free.
